Irishman Padraig Harrington, who won both the British Open and PGA Championship this season, has become the second European to win the PGA Player of the Year award.
Britain's Nick Faldo was the other European to win the award, in 1990.
The award, first presented to Ben Hogan in 1948, is based on a formula that weighs tournament wins, official money standing and scoring average. Although there are four tournaments remaining this season, Harrington's 116 points cannot be passed, the PGA of America said.
Tiger Woods, who has won the award nine times, is second in the points standings with 78, but his season ended when he had knee surgery after winning the U.S. Open in June. Vijay Singh is third with 62 points, while Phil Mickelson and Sergio Garcia are tied for fourth with 54 points.
The PGA Tour player of the year award, which is voted on by the players themselves, will likely not be announced until December.
