ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Wendi Patterson-Golden shot a 2-under 70 on Sunday to top the 64 match-play qualifiers in the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur Championship.

Patterson-Golden, from Sarasota, Fla., had a 2-under 142 total on the 6,189-yard Donald Ross-designed Barton Hills Country Club course.

After playing professionally from 1996-2000, she regained her amateur status two years ago. She coaches the Braden River High School girls' team in Bradenton.

"Yesterday, I played flawlessly and left five or six shots out on the course," she said. "I missed five putts inside of 15 feet. Today, I chunked it five times and still got up and down. I was confident with my putter."

Kathy Hartwiger, the 2002 winner from Birmingham, Ala., shot a 73 to finish a stroke back. Canada's Mary Anne Lapointe, the 2005 winner, shot a 72 to finish third at 1 over.

Virginia Grimes, the 1998 winner from Meridian, Miss., grabbed the fourth spot in match play, shooting a 75 for a 2-over total.

Two-time defending champion Meghan Bolger of Oakland Park, Fla., followed her opening 75 with a 73 to qualify seventh at 4 over.

The tournament is open to amateurs 25 years old or older.
